[natalie gabriel] public artalways has really fascinated me. i think it's really a contrastbetween being a fine art major, where you're sort of making these personal pieces,and they may go in someone's home. you may keep them. but if you're doing something publically, people that you don't even know,across all walks of life, are passing it day-to-day. [therese morgan] and the environmentreally affects people around them. if they're in a beautiful place,and they're excited, they're motivated. if there's trash everywhereand everything is run down,
then it's hard to feel that excitement. so murals really bring life to a community. [michael petricca] the mural was somethingthat we thought would highlight the move of fire engine 1to their new location over here on folsom st. we believe they'rethe best firehouse in the city. they're the busiestfirefighting station in the city, and we wanted to commemorate that moveby offering them a mural. [chris austin] the mural depictsthe past and the present of the san francisco fire department.
we've got old firehouses, old fire engines, and we also have newer enginesin the new firehouse. it's kind of the past and present combined. [danny gracia] we interactwith everybody in the community. we go out the door about40 times a day here between the three rigs, and we deal withall different types of people from all over. and for us to deal with the artists, it's great. the fact that we kind of memorializedfour of our members, taking pictures of them and thentransferring that, doing the artwork up there.
it's just super cool, and like i said,we're really excited about the whole thing. [natalie gabriel] the fire department gets to enjoy something a little more aestheticin their day-to-day workplace, and they have this mural by the end of itthat they get to keep, and sort of brighten up their day. [michael petricca] people can see firsthandhow talented our students and staff are. that they really can paint.they really can perform at a very high level. and there's a wow factor in what they do. they're well taught, they're well respected,and they can do fine art.
